چکیده

Recent interest in biofuels as an alternative energy source has spurred considerable change in agricultural practice worldwide. These changes will be more pronounced as secondgeneration biofuels, such as switch grass and algae, gain prominence. This paper examines the cultural factors associated with the decisions U.S. farmers face in targeting crops for fuel production instead of food. Through an interdisciplinary assessment of the dynamics of farmers’ behavior, we develop a theoretical framework to analyze how farmers grapple with shifting expectations of their function.

Biofuel supply chain design under competitive agricultural land use and feedstock market equilibrium

a r t i c l e i n f o JEL codes: C61 C71 C72 O13 O21 Keywords: Biofuel Supply chain Land use Spatial market equilibrium MPEC The rapid expansion of the biofuel industry diverts a large amount of agricultural crops as energy feedstocks, and in turn affects farm land allocation, feedstock market equilibrium, and agricultural economic development in local areas. In this paper, we propose game-theo...

Cellulose Hydrolysis: An Unsolved Problem

As on today, almost whole world is dependent on fossil fuels as a source of energy. With increase in world’s population there are growing concerns about diminishing fossil fuel resources, global warming and environmental pollution; hence there is a need for search of renewable resources to bridge the gap between the supply and demand of energy and chemicals. In this respect for production of bi...

Salinity on Survival and Early Development of Biofuel Feedstock Crops

Salinity level may affect early development of biofuel feedstock crops. The biofuel feedstock crops canola (Brassica napus L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.); and the potential feedstock crop sweet corn (Zea mays L.) were planted in media in pots and treated with aqueous solutions of 0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 M NaCl once at: 1) planting; 2) 7-10 days afte...

The Role that Lignocellulosic Feedstocks and Various Biorefining Technologies Can Play in Meeting Ireland’s Biofuel Targets

Modern biorefineries target the production of chemicals and fuels from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks such as energy crops and biodegradeable wastes. Biofuels produced from such processes are considered “second-generation-biofuels” and are considered to be more sustainable than first-generation-biofuels from food and oil crops. This paper considers the contribution that biorefineries can ma...
